We are often asked which brands of tequila we recommend for our margarita mixes, both the standard Margarita in a Bag and the Sugar-Free Margarita in a Bag. There are many opinions about this subject at Lt. Blender’s HQ, and the answer you get would depend on who you ask, but there are a few points on which we all agree:
We only drink tequila which is made from 100% agave. Since there are plenty of affordable options which meet that standard, there is no need to settle for anything less than 100%. Not only will inferior brands not taste as smooth, but they use sugar and additives as filler, which means that you will spend the next day in hangover hell. No thanks!
Having said that: we don’t believe in dishing out the big bucks for tequila when we’re making margaritas. We like top shelf tequilas for shots or for sipping, but when we’re mixing cocktails, we tend to stick to the $15-40 range.
We like silver or blanco tequila for margaritas, because they have the cleanest flavor, which allows the other ingredients in the margarita to stand out. We happen to think that our margarita mixes are pretty tasty, and we want you to be able to taste those flavors instead of being overwhelmed by the tequila.
There are a number of tequilas which fit the bill, so here are a few of our favorites: Cabrito Blanco, Lunazul Blanco, Milagro Silver, Republic Blanco, and Tequila Tierras Blanco are all brands which we have bought repeatedly and have never heard any complaints!
If you are in a state of shock that we have left out your favorite brand, please tell us about it in the comments. We are always looking for new tequilas to try.
Happy National Tequila Day!
